New Episode of the Podcast: Episode 70

This past weekend, Nick from Modern Neanderthal and I recorded episode 70 of the podcast.  Here is the episode for your listening pleasure:

Episode 70: Recommendations

And yes, I am phoning this post in.  I did all of the work for the podcast and I am getting ready to leave on vacation.

  1. Great podcast. I really enjoyed the recommendations.
I did have an idea for some community participation: have user-submitted items for the same categories. Either have a post and use the comments, or have a template that we can copy into an email and send to you, and then you post them somewhere. I thought it might be interesting to see what a lot of people would pick in those price brackets.
Obviously it can wait until after the vacation. Have a great time!

    1. I think I will put out a call for recommendations before the next podcast and I will read them on air. Heck I might make it a giveaway.

  2. Did I miss something, or did you skip episode 69?

    1. If I remember right in this one he mentions an audio problem with 69 and it'll have to get fixed.

    2. Nevermind, just listened to the podcast, and you explained it there.

    3. He references that in 70. Supposedly it is in Andrew Gene's hands, who is mixing it. Hopefully it wasn't lost....I don't think I can handle knowing there was an Episode 69 with Andrew Gene that I'll never get to hear...

  3. New series of 2016 L+S recommendations at AllOutdoor!

Re: the $50 category (CRKT Drifter + EagleTac D25AAA)
The D25AAA is just too compromised, will scare newbs off of EDCing a light. That clip is visibly useless even in the promo photo. So drop it in the pocket, you say -- which is when the magnetic tailcap will annoy the sh*t out of them. That combo of (non-) features tells me I will never, ever own that light. I do like the D25A.

I think maybe you're letting your inner flashlight geek distort your recommendations? Hi CRI and 130 lumens are neat but a typical newb or casual user (which is who's likely to shop in the $50 tier) is going to value solid, versatile gear that "disappears" in use and doesn't do anything to tick them off.

Victorinox Alox Cadet plus a Fenix E05 (85 lumens) for the keychain are $50 shipped right on the nose. Done. I would bet you an S35VN Para 2 that if we let a sampling of 20 random noobs try my $50 pairing, then your pairing, mine would win by a large margin. [Let me give Nick a nod and say that some folks will want a clicky and/or a headlamp, and for them the SL Microstream instead of the E05 is a great way to go.]

I look forward to listening to the podcast soon. Enjoy your vacation!
